The Church of the Holy Dormition in Wollongong is part of the Australian and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad.
History
For years, there has been a community of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary in Wollongong, 150 miles from Sydney. The community has about 30
adult members. At the invitation of the Church and Parish Council, a liturgy was
celebrated once a month in rented premises.
About three years ago, the Congregation purchased a piece of land and had
already laid the foundation for a small permanent temple on it.
However, by decision of the authorities, the site was taken over by a newly
built road, and the community was offered a sum of 1,200 pounds for it , which
enabled the community to purchase a small house by making a loan of 2,000
pounds for this purpose.
It took at least a year to complete the purchase of a house and a loan of
money. And here we are, finally, in our home.
On March 12, 1961, the SUNDAY of the Adoration of the Cross, the first Divine
Liturgy was served, with the veneration of the Holy Cross, a thanksgiving prayer
service on the successful completion of the troubles and labours in acquiring a
parish house.
After a prayer service and a meal for all the worshipers, an extended meeting
of the Church Council was held at which it was decided to adapt one half of the
house for worship, arranging a home church in it, and rent the other half to
cover the debt.
The church can accommodate up to 80 people. The community, which for
eleven years did not have a permanent place for prayer, has finally resolved the
sore point and, now having a material base, is getting firmly on its feet.
May the Lord God help us!
